Solution Recipe to Accelerate the Patina Process in Weathered Steel (Corten)

Ingredients:

- 16oz of hydrogen peroxide

- 2oz of white vinegar

- 1/2 tablespoon of salt

1. Preparation

Before applying the rusting solution, ensure the Corten surface is clean and free of any oil or grease. Wipe it down with an acetone or alcohol-based cleaner to remove any contaminants.

2.Optional Sanding

While not necessary, sanding the Corten surface by hand or using a belt sander can help accelerate the rusting process by removing the mill scale or etching the surface

3. Rusting Solution

Mix the hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, and salt together in a container. Use a foam paint roller to apply the solution onto the Corten surface. Ensure the surface is evenly coated, but avoid creating puddles as they can slow down the rusting process.

4. Drying and Brushing

Allow the applied solution to dry on the Corten surface. Once dry, use a soft-bristled brush to brush off any loose rust. This step prevents the loose rust from interfering with additional applications of the rusting solution.

5. Repeat Application

Depending on the desired level of rusting, repeat the application of the rusting solution and brushing off the rust as often as needed. Continue this process until you achieve the desired result.

By following these instructions, you can effectively accelerate the rusting process on your Corten steel surfaces, enhancing their appearance and creating a unique and weathered look. Experiment with different application techniques and frequencies to achieve the perfect rusted finish for your project.
